Kelly Smith
The English soccer star has much to say about the lack of development in the women's game back home. And she should know, having experienced the pitch on both sides of the pond. Smith became a member of England's national team when she was 16, also playing for the Wembley Ladies and Arsenal Ladies before an American scout pointed her to New Jersey. At Seton Hall, she twice led the NCAA in scoring, and she was the first athlete in a sport besides basketball to have her number retired by the school. Now 33 and back with Arsenal, Smith is still fighting the fight, having overcome injuries and a drinking problem to produce 111 caps, 45 international goals and a pro career that has included star turns with the Philadelphia Charge and Boston Breakers. But even in the States, that kind of success gets you only so far. "If I were a male footballer, I'd be a millionaire," Smith once said -- as always, telling it like it is.
