Coco and Mason Ho

Coco, 20, and Mason, 23, are professional surfers.

Her father is Hawaiian surf champ Michael Ho. Her uncle, Derek Ho, won the 1993 world surfing title. Coco Ho grew up on Oahu's North Shore, home to some of the most famous waves in the world. But she credits someone else for introducing her to the ocean: big brother Mason. "My friends didn't hang at the beach, and I didn't see other girls in the water," Coco says. "After school, I'd boogie board while my brother surfed the shore break, and I saw how much fun he was having standing up. When I was 7, I asked if I could borrow one of his boards." For the next few years, she and Mason surfed together after school, with Coco always the only girl in the lineup. Soon, her dad was taking her to bigger spots and she was winning competitions against boys. "I thought she was hard core for wanting to hang with me and my friends," Mason says. Today, when Coco looks past her backyard, she sees groups of girls surfing, and she smiles. They don't need an older brother to follow into the water -- they have each other.
