Christine Sinclair, Flash home at last
My club team, the WPS Western New York Flash, had our first home game in Rochester at Sahlen's Stadium on Sunday. A few thousand excited fans came out to see us defeat the Atlanta Beat 3-0. The Flash is an expansion team and there was a lot of anticipation throughout the entire organization. We were all very excited to be kicking off in front of our home fans.
The day couldn't have been more perfect. The team took a 90-minute bus drive from our home in Buffalo, to our new stadium in Rochester. The bus ride was relaxed, as all of us mentally prepared for our big game.
When we arrived at the stadium, we were surprised to see people already tailgating. In all, we probably had about 3,000 fans in the stands. Hopefully more will come out as people realize how talented we are.
During the game we played very well and completely dominated the Beat. Midway through the first half we finally broke through their stingy defense. Marta took a hard shot from the left hand side that the goalkeeper was unable to handle. The rebound fell to me, and I was able to put the ball in the net. It was a tremendous feeling to score the first goal at home for our young franchise.
At the end of the first half, we were up 1-0 and felt very confident with the way we were playing. We came out strong again in the second half, and once again I was able to find the back of the net on a breakaway. This goal really seemed to deflate our opponents and we continued to press for more. Rookie Alex Morgan scored our third and final goal.
This was our best performance of the young season and it put us at the top of the league standings. Unfortunately, I will miss our next two league games as I head off to Europe to rejoin the Canadian team. I am really looking forward to playing with the national team as we head into our final stages of World Cup preparation.
