A couple of days ago, I made my last cross-Atlantic flight before the start of the World Cup. After a disappointing tie while playing with the Western New York Flash, I quickly boarded a flight to Rome.
The World Cup starts June 26. I am so excited about this. As I look back on the last couple of months, I am overwhelmed. I have flown to Europe four times in the past three months ... I just keep earning those air miles!
Now that I am back with my Canadian national team, the focus has turned to our first game against Germany. We have been training for months in preparation, but in fact we have been preparing our entire lives. This is why we play this sport. We will be in Rome for the next couple weeks before heading to Berlin.
While here, there is plenty of work to be done. However, most of the "hard" work has already been done. We have all worked so hard for this moment and now only the final touches need to be applied. We have one more friendly, our final test before the big dance starts. It will be very interesting to see how far our team has come in the last couple months.
With this team, we also know how to have fun. Tuesday night, a couple of us decided to head out for some pizza. So like any foreigner, we Googled the "best pizza in Rome." We ended up going to the second-ranked pizza joint in the city: Polo Polo. It was amazing. I can't wait to taste the No. 1 place!
We then discovered a new treat. We all know that Italy is known for its gelato and espresso, but when you combine the two it is heaven. The translated name for it is gelato drowning in espresso. I highly recommend it!
