Men's college basketball: Same story, different weekend. The No. 1 team in the country once again lost. No. 1 Duke fell to unranked Virginia Tech on Saturday 64-60 in Blacksburg. While Duke, who came into Saturday riding a seven-game winning streak, shot under 40 percent and went 4-for-20 from 3-point range, all five Virginia Tech starters were in double figures. After three straight years of nearly making the NCAA tournament but falling into the NIT pool, the Hokies are hopeful Saturday's win is enough to get them into the Big Dance this year.
Nos. 4 through 6 also took a tumble this weekend. No. 7 BYU overtook No. 4 San Diego State 80-67 on Saturday. Jimmer Fredette led BYU with 25 points. Saturday's win gave BYU a season sweep over the Aztecs for the third straight year.
No. 5 Texas lost to unranked Big 12 rival Colorado 91-89 on Saturday. Colorado was losing by 22 at one point in the first half but made a comeback to win behind Alec Burks' 33 points and 10 rebounds.
No. 6 Pittsburgh fell to No. 16 Louisville Sunday 62-59 in overtime. Pitt flailed in the extra period, turning the ball over three times and missing all of its field goal tries in OT. Louisville's upset wasn't the only surprise of the game. With .5 seconds left and the score reading 62-57 in favor of the Cardinals, a Louisville male cheerleader ran onto the court and threw the ball up in the air in celebration. The officials called a technical for a delay of game and Pitt's Ashton Gibbs made two three throws, giving the Panthers a chance to tie. Gibbs was unable to get a desperation shot off in time, therefore securing the win for Louisville.
NBA: On Oscar Sunday, the Knicks took home the award for best performance on the court, as they beat the Heat 91-86 in Miami. Each team's star led the show, as LeBron James finished with 27 points and was the Heat's leading scorer, while Carmelo Anthony, who tweaked his elbow in his first loss with the Knicks on Friday when they fell to the Cavaliers 115-109, led New York with 29.
Women's college basketball: It was a big weekend for women's college basketball, as all, yes all, Top 25 teams were in action. There were two big games in particular on Sunday. The first took place within the state of North Carolina. No. 9 Duke defeated in-state rival No. 16 North Carolina 66-58 to clinch the top seed in the ACC tournament. Two top 15 Big 12 programs also faced off on Sunday, and No. 3 Baylor came out victorious over No. 15 Oklahoma 82-81. The Bears were led by Odyssey Sims' 37 points. Baylor now holds a one-game lead over No. 5 Texas A&M in the race for the Big 12 title with two games remaining.
MLB: Detroit Tigers' manager Jim Leyland announced on Sunday that Miguel Cabrera, who was arrested Feb. 16 for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, will be a designated hitter in the Tigers' exhibition game against the Yankees on Monday. It will be Cabrera's first appearance in a game this spring.
