Men's college basketball: Saturday saw the two most talked-about guys in the NCAA, Jimmer Fredette and Jared Sullinger, playing at approximately the same time. Star freshman Sullinger and the No. 1 Buckeyes had the better outcome as they narrowly beat Northwestern 58-57. ... Despite a barrage of 3-pointers by Fredette in the second half, the No. 9 BYU Cougars were upset by New Mexico 86-77. ... The biggest story, though, came yesterday in a game of Blue (Devils) vs. Red (Storm) when No. 3 Duke was stunned by Steve Lavin and St. John's 93-78. I'll leave the tempting political analogies alone.
Women's basketball: In an interview with The Associated Press, WNBA and U.S. star Diana Taurasi denied taking performance-enhancing drugs and vows to play in the WNBA next season.
Australian Open: In the men's final on Sunday, Serbia's Novak Djokovic dominated Andy Murray in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, to win his second Australian Open. Murray, who is becoming the Buffalo Bills of tennis, has now lost three Grand Slam finals. ... A clearly not-pregnant Kim Clijsters won her fourth major final by defeating Li Na in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, on Saturday. Fun fact: This was the first Grand Slam title between two married women in 30 years.
NFL Pro Bowl: This glorified flag football game was so awesomely bad it featured an NFL reporter calling a play and a man having to be escorted by police for running on to the field. The final score was something like 2051-675 (actually, 55-41 NFC) and could use a revamped format immediately.
NHL All-Star Game: I confess, I didn't watch one second of this game or the big "draft." But if you'd like to read more about Team Lidstrom's 11-10 victory over Team Staal, check out this recap.
NBA: In a game featuring Miami's Big 3 against Kevin Durant, of course it was Eddie House who hit the game-winning 3-pointer as the Heat topped the Thunder in an exhilarating 108-103 final. ... The Celtics won the rematch of the NBA Finals, 109-96, on Paul Pierce's explosive third-quarter in which he scored 14 points (he had 32 total). Kobe Bryant had 41 on the day. ... In very non-NBA Finals-related news, the Cleveland Cavaliers now have lost 20 straight. Could be a big week in Cleveland, as the record for most consecutive losses in a season is 23. Hopefully LeBron stays far away from Twitter this time.
