Michigan has hired Erik Bakich as its baseball coach, the school announced Wednesday.
Bakich replaces Rich Maloney, who led the program for 10 seasons before both he and the school decided to part ways in May.
"Coach Bakich is regarded as one of the top recruiters and developers of talent in collegiate baseball," Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said in a statement. "His leadership and enthusiasm will be critical in restoring our baseball program to a championship level."
Bakich, 34, is the youngest baseball coach at any BCS school and comes to the Wolverines fresh off an impressive three-year tenure at Maryland. In his first season with the Terrapins, the school had just 17 wins, but they won 32 this past year.
During his collegiate coaching career, Bakich has recruited and coached 81 players that have been drafted by Major League Baseball clubs, including nine first-round picks.

Michigan baseball has a storied tradition and I am honored to lead this program back to winning championships. We are eager to attack the recruiting trail and will finalize our coaching staff as quickly as possible."
